Heat draws blood to fatigued muscle and loosens connective tissue, which is why athletes sit in a sauna after load rather than before it. Sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes, three to four times a week, are the pattern most recovery protocols follow.
Core temperature climbs, heart rate rises, and vessels dilate to shed the heat. Long-running Finnish population research tracked frequent sauna users over two decades and found this response associated with meaningful cardiovascular outcomes.
Sleep onset follows a drop in core temperature. Heating the body in the evening and then letting it fall produces a steeper decline than the body manages unaided, which is why an evening session tends to shorten the time taken to fall asleep.
